University of Oulu, established 1958, is an international scientific community known for high-quality research and education that provides experts for demanding tasks on both national and international level. The University promotes well-being and education in Northern Finland and is a significant player in the Finnish and European research based system of innovation and education. The University is one of the largest universities in Finland with an exceptionally wide academic base (6 faculties, about 16 600 students and about 3100 staff).

At the University of Oulu, research is conducted in over 70 fields of science. New knowledge originating from basic research increases understanding of the life of both organic and inorganic nature, structure of the universe and of human life, culture, and technology. Applied research and development work continuously produce pioneering inventions and innovations. University of Oulu takes pride in an international level of expertise in the focus areas of Information Technology, Biotechnology, and Northern and Environmental Issues. Research projects are characteristically multidisciplinary.

The field of information technology concentrates, among other topics, on wireless networks and communications solutions, technology contributing to the promotion of human health, mechanical vision and intelligent systems, digital media contents, and applying micro and nanotechnology in new electronic devices and systems.

Research in biotechnology focuses on genes and protein structures, and the development of plants, animals and humans with the methods of molecular biology and genetic technology. One of the objectives is to find causes and cures for different illnesses.
Multidisciplinary research of northern and environmental issues orients itself towards northern culture, nature, earth and atmosphere, as well as human health and well-being in the circumpolar area. The aim is to map out changes in our environment and develop nature-friendly environmental technology.
